David Coulthard and Martin Brundle to join BBC's Formula One commentary team

The BBC has announced the commentary team it will employ when it takes over the coverage of Formula One motor racing from ITV next year.
Recently retired driver David Coulthard will join motor-mouthed former team owner Eddie Jordan as pundits, while Jonathan Legard will assume the commentary duties performed for ITV by James Allen.

Fans of a certain age will be delighted by the return of the legendary Murray Walker, the voice of what for many was the sport's golden age. The 84-year-old, memorably described as commentating "as if his trousers were on fire" will play a more sedentary role on the BBC's website, with a column and Q&A forum.

Martin Brundle, regarded as the most respected member of ITV's on-screen team, will continue his co-commentator role alongside Legard, while pit-lane reporter Jake Kravitz also moves over from the ITV team. He will be accompanied in the pitlane by Lee McKenzie.

The BBC's coverage will be anchored by Jake Humphrey, a former children's television presenter who has recently been fronting a great many football programmes. Occupying a position previously held by the knowledgeable Steve Rider, Humphrey may have his work cut out to win over the petrolhead audience.

Legard commentated on F1 for a number of years for Radio Five Live before moving over to football duties, and, like Brundle, is sure to do a thoroughly competent job. The rest of the BBC's team looks like a cunning combination of new faces, reliably controversial pundits and the most famous name of all. In the eyes of most F1 fans, Walker of the incinerated pantaloons can do no wrong.
